The Naukri Job Speak Index for Mar-10 is just 4% below the peak in July -08 indicating a steadily improving hiring scenario

  • Delhi and Kolkata have been bullish on hiring as the index for Mar’10 at 1117 and 1055 has surpassed the July-08 levels by 10% and 5% respectively
  • Key industry sectors like ITES, Auto and Pharma have seen successive upward movement in the job index for the past three months
  • On the total Jobs (this includes refreshed jobs), the index for the first time surpassed the July’08 levels and stands at 1005

The Naukri Job Speak has seen the index moving up successively for the past three months. This clearly indicates that the tidings in the job market has seen stability and major industry sectors like IT, ITES, Auto, Telecom and Banking have started hiring again. The job index for Mar’10 at 962 as compared to 947 in Feb-10 reflects a continued improvement in the hiring sentiment of recruiters.

Sumeet Singh, National Head, Marketing and Communication, Info Edge said “The hiring intentions of companies in most industry sectors seem to be moving in a positive direction as reflected by the consecutively upward moving Job index in the first quarter of 2010. It seems ‘cautious optimism’ among employers has given way to ‘definite optimism’.”

A detailed analysis of the Job index shows that hiring activity in the ITES and the Insurance sectors has seen maximum movement on the recruitment front with the index moving up by 13% and 15% respectively in Mar-10 over Feb-10. Professionals in ITES and Engineering Design were in high demand as the job index moved up by 12% and 25% in Mar-10 over Feb’10. Although some of the top 10 cities and functional areas shows a dip in the job index but the three month moving average index shows an upward moving trend for all cities and functional areas.

City wise Analysis: Delhi, Pune and Kolkata show an upward moving index in Mar’10 over Feb’10
In a recent Naukri.com - Businessworld survey Delhi emerged as the most preferred location of work by jobseekers and the March job index saw Delhi being most bullish on hiring, with the job index moving up by 13% in Mar’10 over Feb’10.The hiring activity for Kolkata picked up by 6.5% in Mar’10 over Feb’10 while the index for Pune has been moving up successively for the past three months. Although, Chennai, Hyderabad and Mumbai show a dip in the index the three month moving average index moved up by 4%, 9% and 7% respectively in Mar-10 over Feb-10.

Industry Analysis: The hiring activity in ITES, Auto, Insurance and Pharma sectors moved up in Mar’10 as compared to Feb’10
The first quarter of 2010 has seen most of the industries on the path of recovery. It has been witnessed, that the index for the ITES sector has been successively moving in a positive direction for the past seven months with a minor seasonal dip in Dec’09. The job index for the ITES sector moved up by 13% in Mar’10 as compared to Feb’10. The Auto sector has also seen a buoyant hiring scenario in the first quarter of 2010 with the job index moving up by 8% in Mar’10 over Feb’10. The Insurance and the Pharma sectors moved up by 15% and 7% in Mar’10 over Feb’10.

Although the IT sector has seen an 8% dip in the index in Mar’10 over Feb’10, the three month moving average index moved up by 6.5% in Mar’10 over Feb’10 indicating an improving hiring environment as indicated by the Naukri.com Hiring Outlook Survey (Jan-10) where 85% of recruiters in the IT sector has said that new jobs will be created in 2010.

Functional Area / Department Analysis: Professionals in ITES were high in demand in Mar’10 as the job index surpassed the July’08 levels
Professionals in Production, Banking and HR saw an increase in hiring activity by 12%, 8% and 7% respectively in Mar’10 over Feb’10. While, the hiring activity for IT-software and Sales show a decline in the index by 4% and 2% in Mar’10 over Feb’10, the three month moving average index shows an 8% and 6% growth in the index in Mar’10 over Feb’10.

Overall, the index seems to be moving in a robust manner with hiring moving up across all industry verticals, functional areas and cities in the first quarter of 2010.
