Monthly Update of Naukri JobSpeak – Apr '09

  • The overall Job Index declined by 4.7% from 711 in Mar'09 to 677 in Apr'09
  • Mild drop in hiring activity across most cities. Hyderabad picks up after a long slump
  • Hiring activity in BPO and ITeS dropped by 22%, and hiring activity for Sales and Business Development professionals saw a dip

Naukri JobSpeak index at 677, indicates a fall of 4.7% as compared to 711 in Mar'09. The first month of the new financial year witnessed continued downward trend, though, the fall in the index was not as sharp as in the previous month.

On the report, Hitesh Oberoi, COO and Director, Info Edge (India) Ltd said, "In the past we have always seen a slight slowdown in hiring in the months of April/ May when companies get busy with planning for the year."

City indices indicated a fall in hiring activity across most locations including Mumbai, Chennai, Pune, Ahmedabad, Kolkata. Delhi - NCR was stable while Hyderabad saw an upward movement in hiring activity. Most of the industries saw a mild drop. Banking and Financial services saw an improvement in hiring activity.

Of the top 13 cities, 11 cities recorded a fall in the hiring activity. Ahmedabad saw a steep fall by 11%, while most other cities saw a drop of 5-6% in hiring activity in Apr'09 as compared to Mar'09. Mumbai (including suburbs and Thane), was down by 6% in Apr'09 as compared to Mar'09, touching its lowest since Jul'08. Delhi – NCR remained stable at the Mar'09 level.

Industry Analysis: Hiring activity in BPO and ITeS dropped by 22%
Most of the industries saw a marginal drop in hiring activity when compared to Mar'09. IT, Construction and Engineering, Auto and Auto ancillaries moved down marginally by 2%.BPO & ITeS were severely affected and saw a sharp drop of 22%. Insurance saw a dip for the second consecutive month, hiring activity in the industry saw a dip of 11%, as compared to Mar'09. Banking and Financial Services saw an improvement in hiring activity by 4%.

Functional Area / Department Analysis
Demand for ITeS and BPO professionals was severely affected in April, and saw a decline in hiring activity by 22%. Sales and Business Development professionals saw a drop in hiring activity by 8%. IT – Software saw a marginal drop of 1% while IT- Hardware and Telecom saw a drop of 9% in the hiring activity. Banking and Finance professionals saw a improvement in the hiring activity, the index moved up from 514 in Apr'09 to 535 in Mar'09.

Index of Total Jobs
On Total Jobs(this includes refreshed jobs), the index moved down by 5.9% from 815 in Mar'09 to 767 in Apr'09. The movement has been sharper as compared to New Jobs.

Methodology
The index has been calculated based on job listings added to the site month on month. July 2008 has been taken as the base month with a score of 1000 and the subsequent monthly index is compared with data for July. Data has been sourced from Naukri.com and it reflects job listings and therefore hiring trends on the site. Jobs have been categorised by location, functional area, industry, experience bucket. The index has been analysed across Cities/ Functional Area - Deptt / Industry verticals. The report (produced monthly) shows hiring trends across industry sectors, geography and functional areas.
