38% of recruiters anticipate new jobs to be added in 2009, 9.5% predict layoffs: a Naukri.com Survey

Hiring Outlook for the Year 2009
A survey conducted of 1500+ recruiters across India by Naukri.com revealed a positive outlook for the year 2009.

Over 40% Recruiters in Pharma, IT, ITeS, Retail, Telecom, Banking feel that there will be creation of new jobs in 2009. Jobs in the Real Estate industry seem to be the most affected - 16% of the recruiters in the industry felt that there will be layoffs in the sector in the upcoming months.

Monthly Update on The Naukri.com Job Index
According to the Naukri.com Job Index, the overall index at 697 in December, is 10% down from 776 in November. Overall, this implies a 31% decline in new jobs since July 2008, thus reflecting the economic turbulence and impact of the recession in US.

On the report, Hitesh Oberoi, COO and Director, Info Edge (India) Ltd said, "December was worse than expected. In the coming months, no significant recovery is expected, however it is possible that the index will bottom-out at current levels. In this uncertain environment, visibility remains poor."

City wise Analysis: Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai and Kolkata witness a decline in new jobs
Most of the cities saw a decline in jobs, notably Delhi – NCR, registering a drop from 841 in November to 697 in December. Mumbai moved up marginally from 692 in November to 717 in December. Ahmedabad, Chandigarh, Cochin, Baroda remained less affected, jobs grew or declined by a small margin.

Industry Analysis: Automobile slips, jobs decline by 28%
Across most industries, there was a decline in new jobs. The job index for the automobile sector slipped by almost 28% in December, as compared with November 2008. Construction and Engineering and Real Estate continued to witness a slowdown in hiring.

Pharma remained an exception and continued to see an increase in new jobs with the index at 1031.

Functional Area / Department Analysis: Sales and Development Professionals see a growth in new jobs.
Sales and Business Development professionals saw a growth in demand as the index climbed up for a second month from 786 in November to 819 in December 2008. Demand for Security Services and Pharma and Biotech professionals improved during the month.

A break up of jobs available for various experience bands reveals that professionals with 4-7 years of experience are at a higher demand than younger professionals. 36% of the jobs available cater to this experience band.

Methodology
The survey was conducted via email with recruiters across India. Results were tabulated for each sector separately.

The index has been calculated based on new jobs added to the site month on month. July 2008 has been taken as the base month with a score of 1000 andthe Aug-Dec index is compared with the July data. Data has been sourced from Naukri.com and is reflective of new job listings added on the site. Jobs have been categorised by location, functional area and industry. The index has been analysed across Cities/ Functional Area - Deptt / Industry verticals. The report (produced monthly) will show hiring trends across industry sectors, geography and functional areas.
