Naukri Job Speak index for April- 12 grew by 12% as compared to the previous year, signaling a sustained recruitment market

  • On a year on year comparison hiring activity for the Banking, Pharma and IT- Software sectors moved up by 31%, 22% and 18% respectively in Apr-12
  • On the contrary, hiring numbers for Construction, BPO, Telecom and Insurance are still much lower than the Jul-08 figures( the index was started this month)

The first month of the financial quarter starts on a positive note with hiring activity in Apr-12 is being 12% higher when compared to Apr-11. Although, there are some sectors which are still on the path of recovery, hiring in sectors like IT- Software and Banking are surging ahead strongly. The index for IT sector in Apr-12 at 1400 is the highest since inception (Jul-08) and hiring activity is 18% higher when compared to Mar-12.

“While hiring in certain sectors has slowed down, most companies are still cautiously optimistic as good talent is difficult to find. Therefore, we do not expect hiring to slow down in the coming months” said Hitesh Oberoi, Managing Director and CEO, Info Edge India.

Industry Sector Analysis:
If we take a closer look at industries then the job index for sectors like IT, Banking, Pharma and Auto has seen positive movement over the last few months and their indices are well above the 1000 level. On the flip side, the indices for Insurance, Construction, Telecom and BPO sector are 75%, 38%, 19% and 16% lower than Jul-08 levels. However, both Telecom and Insurance sectors have started showing positive movement in hiring activity over the last three months.

Functional Area Analysis:
The demand for professionals in Sales and IT has been upbeat with the indices of Apr-12 being 19% and 27% higher than Apr-11. HR and Production domain have also witnessed positive movement in their hiring activity. On the other hand, professionals in Project Management and Marketing have seen a dip in their demand with their indices being 26% and 15% lower than Jul-08 levels.

City Wise Analysis:
All the metros, barring Mumbai have witnessed a double digit percentage hike in their hiring numbers in Apr-12 when compared to Apr-11. This is primarily because most of the cities are dominated by IT sector hiring. Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Chennai has been upbeat with hiring activity in Apr-12 being 36%, 19% and 17% higher than Apr-11. Tier 1 cities apart from metros are also witnessing increasing hiring numbers year on year.
